Also known as ‘Il-Ġimgħa L-Kbira’! These processions have been held since as early as the 16th century. The passion of Christ is carried on a procession of statues symbolising the sacrifice Jesus had to bear to sacrifice His life for all. This day is celebrated as a commemoration when Jesus Christ died on the cross.
On this day most locals fast, attend the 15:00 service plus the kissing of the cross, then from around 17:00 the processions start. Usually a processions can take between 3 to 5 hours depending on the length of the route. Thousands of locals go to the processions and watch the whole procession go by.
